Are You A Post Modern Christian?

Post Modernism is a bit of a swear word in Christian circles. Even within what is called the 'Emergent Church' most people quickly deride or deny they are post modern in the Christian faith. Reading peoples blogs it seems that everyone is accusing everyone else of being Post Modern (eg a heretic).

Scarily enough I have just filled in a quiz that shows whether you are a Modern Christian, A Post Modern Christian, or thirdly whether you are actually on the right track!

I appear to have failed the quiz as I landed in both the Post Modern Camp and being on the right track. So instead of going to heaven or hell, perhaps its purgatory for me!

I answered mostly C's, so according to the guy's comments I am a post-postmodernist. However, I disagreed with most of what he said so I am relabelling myself as an optimistic post modernist - you know a glass half full kind of a guy.

  To be honest I usually thought B and C were both valid and had points. I was more confidant than B's position but less confidant than C's position. I guess my name should be COMPROMISING CHRISTIAN

Aren't you being a bit tough on yourself? Why compromising? What would you compromise? Would it be the gospel or the way we do church? If it is the way we do church, then you're not alone. I read a great book called Megashift, where the author documents (in one of the appendices) how we have gone from biblical practise of church, through one heresy into another into another to arrive where we are now (ie the way we do church today is actually a type of heresy as it is not biblical and yet is continually "justified" by scripture by those in leadership - something we accuse heretics and cults of doing). Anyway, all that to say you are not alone, and if that is compromising then count me in too! :-)

Yeah, I too answered all C's but one. I guess that would label me a "POST-postmodernist—you are probably following the Lord of History" Interesting web page and quiz...Thanks for sharing!

Yes, I answered C's, so I am definitely a "Post-post modernist." The statement or accusation of "following the Lord of History," gave me a lot to ponder. I am guessing that if a modernist wrote that statement, the meaning would be that I am following a secular lord of history rather than "The Lord."

If a modernist wrote that statement, they wrote it expecting that I would deconstruct its meaning... so:

In my individual "post post modern interpretation," I define the "Lord of History," as being the original and correct Lord, before the modernists mucked him up and followed "The Lord" (a product of religious ideologies).

But I'm sure all Post-post modernists saw this right away.

P.S. Of course the concept of what history is could be deconstructed as well, i.e. whose "history" are we talking about and from whose point of view. I am a firm believer that all concepts could stand a little "troubling," especially concepts related to our faith. If our faith can't stand up to a little troubling, then what does that say about it or us?
